In the Karras room (Karra means cockatoo in the local Bundjalung language) we run our school readiness Preschool Program which is the perfect starting point for preparing your child for school. The aim of our Preschool Program is to build our 3 to 5 year olds knowledge and social and emotional skills whilst preparing them for the challenges of big school. The program promotes active learning through play, real-life experiences, routines and transitions. and is continually evolving around the children’s interests, strengths, ideas and abilities. Our play-based program is carefully planned and organised to promote learning and prepare children for school.
The Karras room is run by a university qualified early childhood preschool teacher and two other educators who plan and implement an engaging play-based program based on the national Early Years Learning Framework. During play, the teachers are able to get a better understanding of the children’s interests and abilities and can help them explore and build on their ideas and strengths.
We run a complimentary learning program for our 3 and 4 year olds. Where suitable we run activities in tandem with both age groups and we also split the age groups for more targeted learning opportunities.
Our Preschool Program focuses on developing:
• Social and emotional skills for your child to connect and relate to others
• Your child’s language and social kills to express ideas and feelings, play co-operatively and negotiate with peers
• Decision making, problem solving, and investigative skills
• Exploring diversity, inclusion and social justice
• Asking questions, extending ideas and challenging thinking
• Early numeracy and literacy skills
• Respectful and caring relationships with people and the environment
TRANSITIONING TO SCHOOL – A key focus of the Karras Preschool Program is to help prepare your child for Kindergarten/Prep. This includes developing their social and emotional skills so they feel personally confident and secure to take the big step to school. There are also practical developmental skills that we focus on building throughout the year, such as self-help skills and responsibility for their belongings.
Rest Time – an essential part of getting ready for school is managing without the daytime sleep many young children are used to. Through the use of the Art Studio and our all weather verandah we are able to effectively manage gradually phasing out rest time as the year progresses. We offer quiet activities during this time and always discuss any specific sleep requirements you may have.
Relationships with local schools – Bili Kids has a great relationship with our local schools to ensure a smooth transition to school for all of our children. Where possible this includes working with the school to offer opportunities for the children to become familiar and comfortable with the school before their first year, including orientation programs, invitations to school special days, library sessions at the school and contributing to special events such as the Bilambil Community Fair.
Our Preschool Room boasts the inclusion of an electronic SMART board, which is used daily to help teach and reinforce a range of literacy and numeracy concepts. It is also a great link to ‘big’ school as many kindergarten/prep classrooms now have SMART boards, as they are a fun and engaging way to help children learn. The SMART board combines the simplicity of a whiteboard with the functions of a computer and is a great way of introducing our children to technology while overseeing and supporting their learning experience.
During the year each child’s progress is monitored, documented and assessed. At the end of the year, families are provided with a Transition Statement that summarises each child’s learning in Preschool. These statements include information from the Preschool teacher, the child and each family, that can be passed onto their school teachers to aid children’s transition to school.
